! I'm studying English and I hate it

9-14 people: You will have at least 5 wonderful surprises in the next 3 weeks.
10 تا 14 نفر:    حداقل 5 شگفتي آفرين در 3 هفته آينده خواهي داشت.
15 people & over: Your life will improve drastically and everything you ever dreamed of will begin to take shape.

پيام را براي خود نگاه ندار. سرود بايد دستان تو را در 4 شبانه روز ترك گويد.

You will get a very pleasant surprise ...

از خدا خواستم عادت‌های زشت را ترکم بدهد.
خدا فرمود: خودت بايد آنها را رها کنی.

I asked God to take away my habit.
God said, no.
It is not for me to take away, but for you to give it up.

از او درخواست کردم فرزند معلولم را شفا دهد.
فرمود: لازم نيست، روحش سالم است، جسم هم که موقت است.

I asked God to make my handicapped child whole.
God said, no.
His spirit is whole, his body is only temporary.

از او خواستم لااقل به من صبر عطا کند.
فرمود: صبر، حاصل سختی و رنج است. عطا کردنی نيست، آموختنی است.

I asked God to grant me patience.
God said, no.
Patience is a byproduct of tribulation. It isn't granted, it is learned.

گفتم: مرا خوشبخت کن.
فرمود: «نعمت» از من، خوشبخت شدن از تو.

I asked God to give me happiness.
God said, no.
I give you blessings; happiness is up to you.

از او خواستم مرا گرفتار درد و عذاب نکند.
فرمود: رنج از دلبستگی‌های دنيايی جدا و به من نزديکترت می‌کند.

I asked God to spare me pain.
God said, no.
Suffering draws you apart from worldly cares and brings you closer to me.

از او خواستم روحم را رشد دهد.
فرمود: نه، تو خودت بايد رشد کنی.
من فقط شاخ و برگ اضافی‌ات را هرس می‌کنم تا بارور شوی.

I asked God to make my spirit grow.
God said, no.
You must grow on yours own! But I will prune you to make you fruitful.

از خدا خواستم کاری کند که از زندگی لذت کامل ببرم.
فرمود: برای اين کار من به تو «زندگی» داده‌ام.

I asked God for all things that I might enjoy life.
God said, no.
I will give you life. So that you may enjoy all things.

از خدا خواستم کمکم کند همان قدر که او مرا دوست دارد، من هم ديگران را دوست بدارم.
خدا فرمود: آها، بالاخره اصل مطلب دستگيرت شد!

I asked God to help me love others, as much as He loves me.
God said: Ahah, finally you have the idea.

is nobler and more beautiful
but until now i have distilled
only one truth out of the whole matter
and this truth is sincerity
which makes all our deeds
beautiful and honorable.

و آن همانا صداقت است
آن چه به همه ي اعمال ما
زيبايي و اصالت مي بخشد

Fastfacts: Improving Your Sentence Structure

Introduction

To improve your academic writing skills, you must first understand possible problems with sentence structure so that you can not only recognize but write effective sentences.

To understand sentences, you must first understand clauses, which make up sentences.

A clause is defined as a group of words containing both a subject and a verb. Clauses can be independent or dependent.

  • An independent clause contains both a subject and a verb and can stand alone as a sentence.

  • A dependent clause contains both a subject and a verb, but cannot stand alone as a sentence. Dependent clauses are introduced by subordinating conjunctions such as because, that, what, while, who, which, although, if, etc.

Kinds of Sentences:

There are three kinds of sentences:

1. Simple:

A simple sentence consists of one main (or independent) clause. To be complete, a simple sentence must have at least one subject and one verb. e.g.,

The man went to the store.

A simple sentence may also have a compound subject and/or a compound verb. e.g.,

The man and his son went to the store and bought some milk.

2. Compound:

A compound sentence has at least two main (or independent) clauses, connected by coordinating conjunctions (and, but, or, nor, for, so, yet). Each clause must have its own subject(s) and verb(s). The second clause should be separated from the first by a comma in front of the coordinating conjunction. e.g.,

The man went to the store, and the salesclerk sold him some milk.

3. Complex:

A complex sentence has one main (or independent) clauseand one or more dependent (or subordinate) clauses. e.g.,

When an atom is split, it releases neutrons.

Dependent clauses can function in the sentence as nouns, adjectives or adverbs:

  • Noun clauses function as nouns in the sentence and can be used as subjects, objects, predicate nominatives, and objects of prepositions. e.g.,

What is most important to him is his family. (subject)
That critic writes that Al Purdy is the best poet in Canada. (object)
You are what you eat. (predicate nominative)
She is very suspicious about what he said. (object of preposition about)

  • Adjective clauses start with a relative pronoun such as who, which, or that and function as adjectives. The pronoun refers to a noun which usually precedes it directly. e.g.,

The woman who bought the red dress is my aunt.
That dress, which is my favorite, was expensive.
The problem that he solved was a difficult one.

NOTE: Use commas around the adjective clause to indicate that the information there is not essential to the sentence, i.e., not needed to identify the subject (see the Fastfacts handout Improving Your Punctuation). Absence of commas, on the other hand, indicates the information is essential to the sentence. e.g.,

The bull that is in the pasture belongs to Joe.

(suggests that, of all the other bulls on the farm, the one in the pasture is being identified as belonging to Joe)

    OR

The bull, which is in the pasture, belongs to Joe.

(suggests that there is only one bull on the farm, so the writer is giving non-essential information by mentioning that it is in the pasture)

NOTE: The word that is used to introduce a clause that is essential to the sentence (without commas), whereas which is used to introduce a non-essential clause (with commas). Some grammar textbooks suggest which can be used for either essential or non-essential clauses, whereas others recommend using whichonly for non-essential clauses.

NOTE: A pronoun (such as which, that) must always refer specifically to one noun. The word which is often used incorrectly. e.g.,

    NO:
Your essays should be submitted on time, which is one way to be a successful student.
(Vague reference because the word which in this sentence refers to neither time nor essays.)

    YES:
One way for you to be successful as a student is to submit your essays on time.

  • Adverb clauses function as adverbs in the sentence, modifying verbs, adjectives, or adverbs. They may tell how, why, when, where, etc. Conjunctions used include although, after, if, because, while, since, whether, etc. e.g.,

When I arrived at the University, classes had already started.
Stan is happy because he received a good grade on his history midterm.
Although Bob is intelligent, he doesn't work very hard.

Problems With Sentences:

1. Sentence Fragments

A sentence fragment is not a complete sentence. It usually lacks either a subject or a verb, or both.

For example, three dogs and a goat. (no verb - what did the animals do?)
Studying too hard on weekends. (no subject - who was studying?)
Because I couldn't find my shoes. (contains a subject and verb, but is a dependent clause)

2. Run-on Sentences: Fused Sentences and Comma Splices

A run-on sentence is one in which two or more independent clauses are inappropriately joined. Remember that the length of a sentence does not determine whether it is a run-on sentence: a sentence that is correctly punctuated and correctly joined can be extremely long. Two types of run-on sentences are fused sentences and sentences with comma splice errors.

  • In a fused sentence, clauses run into each other with no punctuation. e.g.,

The experiment failed it had been left unobserved for too long.

  • A comma splice refers to the error of placing only a comma between two complete sentences, without a connecting word such as and, but, or because. e.g.,

The experiment failed, it had been left unobserved for too long.

To correct a fused sentence or a comma splice error, you can use either a period, semi-colon, colon, coordinating conjunction, or subordinating conjunction. e.g.,

The experiment failed. It had been left unobserved for too long.
The experiment failed; it had been left unobserved for too long.
The experiment failed: it had been left unobserved for too long.
The experiment had been left unobserved for too long, so it failed.
The experiment failed because it had been left unobserved for too long.

  • A comma splice also occurs when commas are used before conjunctive adverbs (therefore, however, nevertheless, moreover, etc.) connecting two sentences. e.g.,

    NO:
The experiment had been left unobserved for too long, therefore it failed.
    YES:
The experiment had been left unobserved for too long; therefore, it failed.

    YES:
He wasn't prepared to defend a client who was guilty; however, he could be persuaded to accept a bribe.

NOTE: When the conjunctive adverb is within the clause rather than at the beginning, place it between commas. e.g.,

He wasn't prepared to defend a client who was guilty; he could be persuaded, however, to accept a bribe.

3. Loose Sentences

  • A loose sentence may result if you use too many "and" connectives when other conjunctions would be convey a more precise meaning. e.g.,

John had a weight problem, and he dropped out of school.
(what is the most accurate connection: John had a weight problem so he dropped out of school or because he dropped out of school?)

  • A loose sentence also results from weak sentence construction and the inclusion of many phrases and clauses in no particular order. e.g.,

In the event that we get the contract, we must be ready by June 1 with the necessary personnel and equipment to get the job done, so with this end in mind a staff meeting, which all group managers are expected to attend, is scheduled for February 12.

NOTE: Writing the previous passage as several sentences may be more effective.

4. Choppy Sentences

A succession of short sentences, without transitions to link them to each other, results in choppy sentences. e.g.,

NO:
Our results were inconsistent. The program obviously contains an error. We need to talk to Paul Davis. We will ask him to review the program.

YES:
We will ask Paul Davis to review the program because it gave us inconsistent results.

5. Excessive Subordination

Excessive subordination is not an effective substitute for choppiness. e.g.,

NO:
Doug thought that he was prepared but he failed the examination which meant that he had to repeat the course before he could graduate which he didn't want to do because it would conflict with his summer job.

YES:
Doug thought that he was prepared, but he failed the examination. Therefore, he would have to repeat the course before he could graduate. He did not want to do that because it would conflict with his summer job.

6. Parallel Structure

Parts of a sentence which are in sequence must all follow the same grammatical or structural principle. e.g.,

NO:
I like to swim, to sail, and rowing.
YES:
I like to swim, to sail, and to row.
YES:
I like swimming, sailing, and rowing.

NO:
This report is an overview of the processes involved, the problems encountered, and how they were solved.
YES:
This report is an overview of the processes involved, the problems encountered, and the solutions devised.

When I feel like it
When I get done
When I want to
When I'm ready
When is it scheduled?
When it all took place
When we get back
When you are here
When you come back
Why not do it right away?
You better hurry

How to Communicate Bad News

Unfortunately, there are times when we have to tell someone bad news. Whether it’s the death of a loved one, the loss of a job, or some other tragic event, it’s never easy to be the bearer of bad tidings. Here are some suggestions that can make communicating bad news easier for both parties.
Choose The Right Time and Place

My mother often said throughout my formative years that there is a time and a place for everything. When it comes to communicating bad news, that saying is all the more true.

I'll never forget the day I saw my supervisor, a classy, self-possessed women named Susan who held a very responsible position with the firm I worked for, burst into tears in the middle of the office one Wednesday afternoon. For some reason, her sister chose to tell her of her mother’s passing over the phone while she was still at work. Susan broke down and sobbed inconsolably for quite some time.

Later Susan mentioned that even though she knew she had no reason to be, she was very embarrassed by the way she lost control in front of her staff and worried that people at the firm might think less of her somehow. That should not be the case, but I understood how she felt. Susan’s sister made the mistake of choosing the wrong place and time to communicate bad news.

From Susan’s example its easy to see why a considerate and compassionate person would never share bad news such as the death of a loved one with someone who is at work, or school or in any other circumstance where they cannot express their grief in private, unless its an extreme circumstance.

Give Bad News Face to Face

Of course there are times that we have to deliver bad news that is not as extreme as the death of a loved one. We may have to tell an employee that they did not get the promotion they wanted, or we may need to end a relationship with someone we've been dating. Under almost every circumstance, it is best to deliver bad news face to face.

Sharing information like that via e-mail or leaving a message in voicemail shows a gross lack of courage and consideration, it also robs us of the opportunity to soften the blow, something any master of the art conversation would want to do when delivering bad news.
Be Prepared

If you must tell someone bad news, be prepared to be empathetic towards whatever emotion he or she displays upon hearing it. If you are familiar with the person you are sharing bad news with, you might already have a good idea how her or she will react. If you are not, keep in mind that everyone expresses grief or sorrow in a different way. Be prepared to empathize instead of criticize, even if you think the person’s reaction is over the top.
Be Empathetic

How? Well, one way is to simply let the recipient of the bad news give you a clue as to what you should do to show empathy. If she sheds some tears, be the convenient shoulder for her to cry on. If he becomes angry, listen sympathetically as he gets it out of his system.

Avoid expressions like, “I know exactly how you feel” unless you've actually experienced the same situation. A better thing to say is, “I can only imagine what you're feeling. I'm so sorry.” And if it’s appropriate, ask what you can do to help. Sadly, there is probably nothing you can do to make the recipient of bad news feel better at that moment, but your concern and willingness to help will be appreciated.

Having to be the barer of bad news is a job that most of us would like to avoid, but when its something we must do, chose the right time and place, say what you must face to face, and be prepared for to deal with and be empathic toward whatever reaction the recipient of the bad news might have. These few suggestions will help you communicate bad news in a way that is as painless as possible for the both of you.

Public Speaking - Part I
Give Presentations Like a Pro

Recently I had to give a short presentation before an audience of about 300 people, most of whom where total strangers to me. To say I wasn't nervous would be one of the most outlandish lies ever told. Before I took the podium beads of sweat dripped down my back, my stomach was in a horrible knot, and I could barely remember my own name, never mind what I was supposed to say. Public speaking can be a nerve-wracking, gut twisting and harrowing experience.

Fortunately for me I've learned several techniques that, despite my nervousness, helped me give a professional and fluent presentation. Here are a few pointers that can help make you a public speaking pro too.
Advanced Preparation

One of the most important steps in public speaking is to prepare, and prepare well. What is the topic you will be speaking about? How long should your presentation be? Will you be using visual aids of any kind? What type of people will be in the audience? Do they know very little about the subject to be discussed, or are they well versed in it? Will there be a question and answer session after the presentation? What type of questions might I be asked?

Once you have the answer to the questions above and any others that you can think of that are apropos, you will be able to do the research necessary to prepare your presentation

Give Your Speech From an Outline

There is no experience more terrifying then after you've worked hard to memorize your presentation, you forget what you're supposed to say next smack dab in the middle of it. However, if you use an outline, that problem can be avoided.

What is an outline you ask? Well, an outline is a listing of the key points of your presentation written in order from the introduction to the conclusion. More then likely, you will be giving a presentation on information you're familiar with. By putting the key points that you want to cover on an index card, or whatever you choose to use, you will have a guide that will jog you memory on what your next point will be. Your presentation will be free flowing and spontaneous instead of mechanical and wooden, as it would be if you simply repeat written text verbatim.

One thing that I always do is write out my entire introduction as part of my outline. That way, when I draw a blank when I first step in front of the microphone, I have my introduction right in front of me. You'll find that once you get those first few words out, the rest of the presentation will be a piece of cake.
Practice, Practice, Practice

Its impossible to overemphasize how important it is to practice your presentation. Once you've done your research and you know exactly what you want to say, make your outline and then start practicing. Be sure to practice in front of a mirror. Looking at yourself as you give your presentation is a good way to check your gestures and make sure you have good eye contact with the audience, which are both essential parts of public speaking.

In next weeks communication tip on public speaking, I will tell you why eye contact and gestures are vital if you want to give a good speech.

Until then, plan in advance, speak from an outline, and practice, practice, practice, and you will be well on your way to becoming a master in the art of public speaking.

Public Speaking - Part II
Give Speeches that are Enjoyable

About a week ago I attended a seminar where the main topic was female entrepreneurs and the challenges they face. Since I am a female entrepreneur, the subject matter was of great interest to me, but the presentations given by several of the speakers where boring enough to put an insomniac hopped up on amphetamines to sleep.

In public speaking, how you present the information is just as important as the information itself. Let’s find out how good eye contact and gesturing can help make a dull, uninspiring presentation into a lively, fun and informative one.
Establish Good Eye Contact

What is good eye contract? If you watch a very skilled public speaker give a speech, you'll notice that he never spends more than a few seconds glancing at his notes (and if they have a TelePrompTer, you won't see the speaker looking at notes at all). Instead, the speaker looks directly at the audience. One of the reasons to establish good eye contact is that it makes the speaker seem more knowledgeable about the subject being discussed than someone who is tied to reading the information from note cards. So good eye contact will increase your credibility.

Since every public speaker wants to be credible, what is the best way to establish good eye contact? When you start your speech, pick a friendly face in the audience and spend a few moments speaking directly to that person. If looking directly in someone’s eyes makes you nervous, look at the bridge of their nose, which is so close to their eyes that they won't be able to tell the difference. Then, move on to someone else and talk to that person for a moment or two.

For that few moments of eye contact, its like you're having a one-on-one dialogue with that person, so that your presentation seems more like a friendly conversation, and less like a lecture. As you can see, establishing good eye contact is an important step in good public speaking.

Hand Gestures

Previous conversations tips have discussed the importance of non-verbal communication, but here we are talking about a specific form of it, and that is the hand gesture. Using hand gestures can make your speech come alive because it adds visual cues to what your saying. If you are talking aboutone simple rule”, for example, holding up one finger will help drive home your point. Or, if you are talking about “a great expanse of ocean”, spreading your hands far apart can help your audience visualize what you're saying.

If you've ever had a conversation with someone who uses hand gestures naturally, I'm sure you'll agree that the gesturer adds a lot of attention grabbing animation to what he or she is saying. The same holds true for the public speaker that uses hand gestures frequently during his speech. An animated delivery will hold your audience’s attention.
In Summary...

To summarize the information in this conversation tip, establishing good eye contact with your audience will make your speech or presentation more like a conversation then a lecture. It will also help you establish credibility. Be sure to use hand gestures to add emphasis and animation to your speech to keep your audiences attention. These two tips will help you give speeches that are enjoyable.

Next weeks tip will help you avoid speaking in a monotone and combat the butterflies that sometimes invade your stomach before you give a speech.

Communication In The Workplace

If you're anything like me, from Monday thru Friday you spend most of your waking hours at your place of employment. On average most Americans spend from 10 – 12 hours a day at work. And again, if you are like me, you spend a good deal of that time talking. Talking to clients, talking to co-workers, and taking to your boss. With all that talking going on, it’s obvious that using good communication skills in the workplace is important.
Is Formal or Informal Speech Appropriate?

What is formal and informal speech? Well, formal speech is the way you would speak if you had to have a conversation with someone very important, like the President, or the bank employee who you hope will give your loan request his/her stamp of approval. On the other hand, informal speech is the manner of speaking you would use with your friends or relatives. What is the proper type of speech to use at your place of employment?
Take A Cue From the “Movers and Shakers”

The best way to find out whether you should use strictly formal speech at your place of employment or not is by taking a look at what themovers and shakers” are doing. They are the employees whose career is advancing and seem to have friends in high places. Do they use perfect grammar or do they let split infinitives, double negatives and colloquialism slip out all the time. If you are interested in getting ahead in the work place, then take your cue from the people who are doing just that.

Have a Kind Word for Everyone

Regardless of the position you hold at your firm, be ready to say a friendly “good morning” or some other kind word to anyone you come in contact with at your place of employment, whether it’s the CEO or the person who takes out the trash. It makes you a better human being, and makes the workplace more enjoyable for all. After all, file clerks have become CEOs.
Stay Up to Date in Your Field

Do you want to always have plenty to say that is of interest to your coworkers or your employer? Then keep up to date with what’s going on in your field. Read the available trade magazines and visit pertinent websites. Being able to hold an intelligent and interesting conversation on new developments in your line of work will help make you an invaluable employee who can communicate well in the work place.
Keep It Down and Be Discreet

In all honesty, no one spends every moment at work talking about work related subjects. Weddings, new babies, who got a nose job and the like, are discussed by the water cooler in offices the world over. Though not many managers will begrudge you a few moments of downtime, having loud and boisterous conversations over the tops of cubicle walls is not a great idea. It’s unprofessional and distracting to those who are still working. So, enjoy the company of your co-workers when your workload allows it, but keep it down and be discreet.
Don't Be Offensive

The laws against sexual harassment in the workplace that are on the books in the US and other nations make it wise to be mindful of what you say at work. Dirty jokes, course language and off color remarks may not seem like a big deal, but some people may find them very offensive and by law they don't have to put up with it. Since the workplace should be a safe, comfortable and non-threatening environment for all, perhaps it’s best to save those jokes and the like for after hours.
Communication in the Workplace (in conclusion)

The tips mentioned above should get you well on the way to becoming a master in the art of communication in the work place. By keeping them in mind, you can make your workday more enjoyable, and give a healthy boost to your career.

Shifting the Topic of Conversation

As you practice the art of conversation, starting and joining many conversations with many different types people, there will come a time when you'll want to shift the topic of conversation to something else.

It could be that the topic under discussion is causing tempers to flare up or is of poor taste, silly or just plain boring. Whatever the reason, there are ways that you can “change the subject” with out being rude, or even obvious about it. Here are some pointers on how that can be done.
Look to Segue into a better topic

The word “segue” means to make a seamless transition without interruption from one activity, topic, or part to another. Look for a word or phrase that will allow you to segue into a better topic. Here’s an example:

I read somewhere that grass grows at a rate of .00359 inches a day.” Says conversation partner #1.

Do you mean all varieties of grass or just Bermuda Grass?” Asks conversation partner #2.

I heard that Bermuda grass is becoming the most popular type of grass grown in our region, (The segue) but not as popular as the grass you smoke. I read recently that they are considering making smoking pot legal in our State. What do you think?” Says conversation partner #3, who has masterfully shifted the topic of conversation.

The Direct Approach

Another way to change the subject is to be direct about it. You can say something as simple as, “I hope you don't mind if I change the subject because things are getting a little heated in here.” Or perhaps you might add a little humor to lighten the mood by saying, “Maybe we should change the subject before a fight breaks out. You know I don't mind a good fight, but I just got my nails done.”

Of course, once you've made the suggestion to change the subject, you should have a new topic ready at hand. Plunge right into your new topic, and the old one may soon be memory.
Keeping the Conversation Alive

Shifting the topic of conversation skillfully is also a way of keeping a conversation alive when the present topic has run its course. That way, an excellent conversationalist can keep his/ her conversations fresh and interesting.

So, practice shifting the topic of conversation by using cleverly crafted segues or the direct approach, and be prepared to shift the conversation once the present topic has become stale, and you will have the ability to make so-so conversations into great ones.

How to Disagree Without Being Disagreeable

Have you ever found yourself in the middle of a conversation where you just did not agree with what you where hearing. Whether the topic is religious in nature, a political debate, or something as trivial as who has the better buns Mel Gibson or Brad Pitt, sometimes you just don't agree.

What should you do in that circumstance? Well, if you're interested in continuing the conversation, you might be inclined to just bite your tongue and let your conversation partner ramble on. Or perhaps you're style is to agree with everything, regardless of how you truly feel, for the sake of being agreeable.

Well, both of those methods will work, but isn't it much better to have a really interesting conversation where everyone’s opinions can be heard, respected and discussed? As a practitioner of the art of conversation you should be able to disagree with your conversation partners without being disagreeable.

What’s the Difference?

Well, when you disagree with someone you have a difference of opinion. When you are disagreeable; you are unpleasant, offensive, quarrelsome and bad-tempered. The two do not have to go together. You can disagree with someone’s point of view with out being quarrelsome or unpleasant about it. Here are some examples of how to disagree disagreeably.
Disagreeable Ways to Disagree.

That’s the dumbest think I've ever heard.” “Where did you come up with that idea?” “That doesn't make a bit of sense.” “You're wrong.”

Say any one of the sentences above, or something similar, and your conversation will either come to a screeching halt or blow up into a full-fledged argument.
Disagreeing the Right Way.

Your point of view is very interesting, but I think…” “Its been my experience that…” “I believe that…” “You could be right, but I'm pretty sure that…”

How could anyone take offense to your giving an opposing viewpoint when you start with any one of those sentences, especially if it’s given in a friendly, non-combative tone of voice? It is possible to disagree with out being disagreeable.

Everyone is entitled to his or her own opinion, no matter how wrong you think it is. Keep that in mind, and you will be able to disagree agreeably with anyone you meet, and have interesting, thought provoking conversations.

And who knows? Occasionally, you might even be convinced to change your mind.

Good Cell Phone Conversation Etiquette

I'm sure this has happened to you. You're sitting in a restaurant with friends having a wonderful lunch and a great conversation. Then the person at the next table gets a cell phone call and proceeds to hold a loud and disruptive, one-sided conversation throughout your entire lunch. How annoying.

Here are a few guidelines on good cell phone conversation etiquette that everyone interested in making good conversation will want to know.
Speak in a Normal Voice

Most of the time, it should not be necessary to yell into a cell phone in order to be heard. You should be able to talk in a normal speaking voice, and still be clearly understood by the person on the other end of the line. If that isn't happening for you, then there’s probably something wrong with your phone (or your service provider).
Find An Out of the Way Spot

If you get a call while you're out and about, find an out of the way spot to stand and hold your conversation. I accidentally collided with a woman the other day that unexpectedly stopped in the middle of the traffic flow to hold a phone conversation. I ended up dropping my mint chocolate chip ice-cream cone. Again, how annoying.

Don't Forget the One Your With

I can't think of anything ruder then being with someone who answers their cell phone, and then holds a 20-minet conversation with someone else while you sit and twiddle your thumbs. Unless the call is an emergency, its best to speak to your caller at another time and enjoy the company of the one you're with.
Set Your Cell Phone on Vibrate

When you're at the movies, attending a class, listening to a lecture or even when you are at work (company policies vary), it is best to keep your phone on vibrate. That way, the ringing of your phone will not disturb the people around you.
Happy Celling

Cell phones are one of the greatest inventions. They help us keep in touch when we're on the go, and are extremely handy in emergencies. Keep these few guidelines on cell phone etiquette in mind, and you will be a master of the art of conversation, even on a cell phone.

How To Make Good Electronic Conversation

The invention of e-mail, instant messaging and text messaging has forever changed the way we communicate. Gone are the days of waiting 3 days for a letter to arrive in the mail, searching the house for stamps, or rummaging through junk draws for a pen that doesn't leak. Communication with someone as close as next door, or as far away as the other side of the globe can be accomplished with a couple of key strokes and a few clicks of the mouse.

Electronic communication has many advantages (speed, ease of use, low cost), but it also has some pitfalls. Lets examine a few, and see how we can avoid them.
The Unintentionally Rude Message

One of the things that should be kept in mind when composing e-mails or typing up text messages is the fact that these forms of communication are flat and very one-dimensional. The same comment made with a smile or a wink of the eye, might seem quite rude when read in plain text without those physical cues.

A good example of what I mean is the day I sent my boss a text message stating that I was taking a sick day because of food poisoning. He wrote back that my poor cooking skills shouldn't keep me from coming to work. He meant it as a joke, and no doubt he was smiling with a twinkle in his eye as he typed his text message. I couldn't see that smile or twinkle and was extremely offended.

So, whenever you're composing an e-mail or text message, read it over carefully. Ask yourself if there’s room for your message to be misinterpreted. If you're communicating with someone electronically who seems to be getting hostile for no apparent reason, check out the messages you've sent. You might find that something you've typed has been totally misunderstood.
THE ANGRY MESSAGE

For those of you who are new to the world of e-mail and text messaging, the use of all capital letters means more than just an accidental activation of the caps lock feature. In cyber speak; writing a message in all caps is the equivalent of shouting at someone. Unless you intend to scream at the recipient of your message, never send a message in all caps.
The Emotionless Message

One great way to make sure that the emotion behind your messages is properly conveyed is by using emoticons, which are also known as Smileys. Perhaps you've seen someone end an e-mail with the following symbol - :). That means the sender is smiling at you. At www.computeruser.com you'll find many useful emoticons that symbolize everything from “I'm confused” to “hugs and kisses”. Of course they may not be appropriate for business communication, but smileys are a great way to spice up your personal electronic correspondence.
The Poorly Spelled Message

Spell checking is a feature of any decent e-mail package. It not only helps you make your e-mail easier to read and understand, but spell checking often makes grammatical errors stand out. Someday spell checking will be a feature of instant messaging, but for now…excuse my poor spelling and typos.
In Conclusion

Avoid the pitfalls of electronic communication. Reread what you've typed, looking out for the ways your message might be misunderstood, avoid using all caps, use spell check, and make your correspondence fun by adding emoticons. These simple steps will help you master the art of electronic communication.

Bad Language and the Art of Conversation

There was a time when kids had their mouths washed out with soap if they used swear words, and no women with any breeding would dare say anything more harsh than phooey. How times have changed.

Swearing seems to be chic nowadays. Even the most ladylike looking woman who wouldn't be caught dead scratching herself in public has no problem letting loose a string of cuss words that would make any sailor feel right at home. But how does using course language fit in when it comes to making good conversation?

Well, practitioners of the art of conversation might want to use swear words sparingly, if at all. Why? For one thing it sounds better. Listen to two people having a conversation that is full of bad language. How does it sound? Four letter words are harsh one-syllable words that tend to ruin the melodious flow of conversation and make your speech sound choppy, course and provocative

In addition, when you are meeting someone for the first time, what type of impression do you want to make? What comes out of your mouth says a lot about the type of person you are inside.

Also, English (like all other languages) is a vibrant and beautiful language full of hundreds of thousands of adverbs, adjectives, verbs and nouns. A well thought-out sentence filled with descriptive words drawn from a good vocabulary can be far more poignant and powerful than any sentence peppered with four letter words.

Give it a try. The next time someone makes you really angry, try telling him or her so without the use of any course language. You'll be amazed at how eloquent you can be.

On the other side of the coin, an explicative coming from someone who rarely uses them carries ten times more weight and emphasis than the same word spoken by someone who uses course language all the time.

Of course, how you choose to speak is up to you. However, if you want to master the art of conversation and make what you say palatable to all, and at the same time get the most impact out of what you say, you might want to use bad language sparingly, if at all.

The First Date and the Art of Conversation

I don't know about you, but I can't think of any other experience (besides public speaking) that can make my heart pound, my palms sweat, and my tongue get all tied up in a knot like going on a first date, especially if I'm really interested in the guy.

So what is the remedy for those first date jitters that cause your ability to make conversation sound like you have the intelligence of a five year old? Here are some suggestions:
Relax; Part of The Battle Has Already Been Won

We all know that the first date jitters are caused by the strong desire to make a good impression so that they'll be even more dates. Well, here’s a thought. Unless you happen to be going on a blind date, you can be pretty sure that the person you going on a date with is already impressed with you.

Would he have ask you out in the first place if he didn't find something about you that he liked? Or would she have agreed to go out with you if she wasn't already impressed by something about you? So relax. You've already made a good impression, so part of the battle has already been won.

Be Prepared

One way to keep your mind from going totally blank when you want to make interesting and witty conversation is to prepare a little something to say. If it’s possible, find out a little bit about the person you will be dating. What are his, or her interests? What type of work does he or she do?

Also, think about the things that are most interesting about you. If you have a fascinating hobby or pastime that you enjoy, prepare to say a little bit about that. Or perhaps you've heard an interesting or funny story. Being prepared will help you to be able to fill in those awkward silences that sometimes happen on a first date, and think of how impressive that will be.
Practice Make Perfect

There’s no better way to prepare yourself for the dating scene then to become an expert at talking to strangers. Once you’ve become comfortable with talking to people you don’t know, the first date and dating in general will becomes a lot easier. People are generally attracted to relaxed, self-assured people, and that’s what you’ll be once you've mastered the art of talking to strangers.
Let Your Date Do Some Talking

Of course we want to impress our date with our witty repartee, but doing so to the point where he or she can’t get a word in edgewise will have the opposite effect. The truth be told, most people really enjoy talking about themselves, so let your date do a little taking. After all, dating is a way for two people to get to know one another, and that can’t happen unless both parties get a chance to express themselves.
Don’t Worry, Be Happy

Follow the suggestions above, and you’ll no longer have to agonize over catching the first date jitters. You’ll be relaxed, worry free, and happy because you have mastered the art of conversation on the first date.

How To Improve Your Grammar

Improving your grammar is really not that difficult, especially if you live in an English speaking country. As a matter of fact, examples of good grammar are everywhere. Here are a few examples:
Listen to or Watch the News

If you want to hear how English should be spoken, listen to or watch the News. Of course, the way words are pronounced may reflect regional preferences but the grammar used will be impeccable. After all, everything an anchorperson says, with exception of the “friendly banter” (and sometimes even that), is scripted by professionals who make their living writing well-researched and grammatically correct copy.
Read the Newspaper

Newspapers have teams of editors checking the grammar and spelling of every article published. So, if you want to improve your grammar, and get the side benefit of being well informed, read a quality newspaper daily.
Listen to a Politician Give a Speech

For the most part, politicians use good grammar. Similar to anchorpersons, high-ranking politicians have professional speechwriters either completely write their speeches, or edit speeches they have written themselves, so you can be confident that the politician that is making full use of the teleprompter during his speech is using proper grammar.

Take a Course

These days, almost every college has continuing education courses for adults. Since you do not earn college credits from these courses, they are usually inexpensive. Check the course bulletin distributed by your local community college and see if there’s a course that will help you improve your grammar. They are usually short, interesting and a great way to make new friends.
Listen to Someone Whose English you Admire

My friend Leslie is originally from London and speaks the most beautiful English I've ever heard. Her speaking voice is marvelously resonant, and she has that classic British accent that is musical to the ear. Of course as an American it would be rude to mimic her accent, but I can copy her grammatical style.
Improving Your Grammar Is Easy

As you can see from the examples I've listed above, improving your grammar is easy. Many of the suggestions I've given, like listening to the news, you may already do on a regular basis. It’s just a matter of paying closer attention to what’s being said grammatically, and copying what you've heard.

The ability to speak is a natural gift that we humans enjoy, so it’s easy for any one of us to master the art of communication by using good grammar.

How Important Is The Use Of Proper Grammar?

I overheard the following conversation between two intelligent looking teenagers on the subway about two weeks ago:

Do you got any tic-tacs cause my breath is really oniony?” asks teenager number one.

I don't buy those things. They're full of sugar, and sugar ain't no good for your teeth,” replies teenager number two.

I don't know about you, but their use of the English language made me cringe. Double negatives, poor sentence structure, and the like made what they where saying “painful to the ears”.

Does that really matter? In this 21st century where the use of coarse language seems to be the norm and “ain't” can be found in the dictionary, is using good grammar really important? Well, if you intend to be a master in the art of conversation, good grammar is essential.

Never Judge a Book by Its Cover, But…

We've all heard the old adage “never judge a book by its cover”, but let’s face it, we all make snap judgments about every person we meet. The way someone dresses, his hairstyle, his manner, and the way he speaks can make us think highly of that person, or not so highly.

How would you judge the two teenagers I overheard in the subway? What type of people do you think they are? Would you say they are intelligent and well educated? After hearing them speak, would you want to employ them? Would you be interested in holding a lengthy conversation with them? These are very thought provoking questions aren't they? Ask yourself. What does the way I speak say about me?
English As a Second Language

Of course, we have to take into consideration that our society is a great melting pot filled with people from different countries where English is not the predominate language. Using good grammar may be much more difficult for someone whose native tongue is a different language with its own sentence structure and grammatical rules.

We should all take our hats off to (or “give props to” if you prefer a more modern expression) people who have made the effort to learn our language.
English As a First Language

However, for those of us who have been speaking English since childhood, we should want to speak properly. Using good grammar shows that we are intelligent and educated. It tells our listeners that we not only enjoy speaking, but also take pride in how we do it.

Of course we don't want to obsess about speaking properly so much that our speech sounds unnatural and snobbish, but as an artisan of good conversation, we want to use good grammar so that we can be well understood and make a good, lasting impression on all who hear us.

How To Increase Your Vocabulary

In last weeks conversation tip, we talked about the value of having a good vocabulary. It was established that a good vocabulary is one of the tools needed to make good conversation. Well, that leads us right into this week’s topic, which is how to increase your vocabulary. Actually it’s quite easy. Here are a few suggestions.
Read A Good Book

There is no easier way to increase your vocabulary than by reading. Of course, books and other reading material that can be classified aslight reading” may not have much in the way of words you don't already know, but if you pick up a more literary work, you should find plenty of new words to add to your vocabulary. The beauty of learning new words as you read is that you already have an example of how it should be used in a sentence, which helps clarify the meaning of the word even more than just a dictionary definition alone.
Make a Game Out of It

There are many different word games that you can play that will help increase your vocabulary. If you have the completive spirit like I do, nothing will give you more motivation to learn new words (particularly words that contain the letter “z” or “w”) than the desire to win. I owe a good portion of my vocabulary to “game night” with my family where we ate popcorn and played Scrabble, Boggle and a host of other board games.

How Important is a Good Vocabulary?

Experts say that the English language contains over 600,000 words and word forms. Now that’s a lot of words. Think about it. How many words do you know? How important is it to have a good vocabulary?
The Artist’s Tools

Making good conversation has been likened to an art, and in every art form, whether it’s painting, glass blowing or woodcarving, the artist uses many different tools. Our vocabulary is an important tool that we can use to make good conversation, and we should have the very best tools money (or time and effort) can buy.
Descriptive Words

Having the ability to describe something is an important tool to have if you want to make good conversation. Saying that “Caroline wore a green dress” is an adequate description if the dress is in fact green. But how much more interesting it is if you say that Caroline wore an aquamarine, sage, chartreuse or emerald green dress. You can change your conversations from dull to dynamic by varying the descriptive words you use.

Common Courtesy and The Art of Conversation

Please. Thank you. Excuse me.

Words like the above seem to be fading from everyday language. If you live in a large city like I do, its not unusual to be stepped on or bumped into with out so much as an acknowledgment by the offender, never mind hearing that person say, “Excuse me” or “I’m sorry”.

However, for those of us who want to “make good conversation”, common courtesy is essential. No request is complete with out the word “please”, no favor properly acknowledged without “thank you” being expressed. But it seems that many people have gotten away from being courteous.
Is Being Courteous Passé

Some may say that in this dog-eat-dog world where aggression and me first-ism is king, being courteous is outdated. That is true if all you’re concerned about is yourself, but for those of us who want to start and have great conversations, being courteous is a good way to make that happen. Why is that the case? Because courteous people are generally well liked.

Who wouldn’t like someone who is always quick to say “thank you” or “please”? Who wouldn’t enjoy having someone enter a room and greet you with a hardy “hello” or “good morning”? Who wouldn’t forgive someone who walked all over your feet if he or she said a truly heartfelt “I’m sorry”?

It’s the Right Thing to Do

Besides that fact that being courteous will make you a likeable person, it’s also the right thing to do. In this world where crime, war, and terrorism have become something we all have to face in one form or the other, being kind and courteous is a way to make the tough times a little more bearable for everyone.

Then to, you never know who you’ll come into contact with each day and how they can impact you life, so be courteous to all. Let please, thank you, I’m sorry, and the like be a part of your pattern of speaking, and you will find that not only will you meet many interesting people to converse with; you’ll also help make the world a better place.

Watch Your Tone - How You Say It Effects What You Say

If you where anything like I was when I was a kid, then you’ve heard your mother say to you on more than one occasion “I don’t like your tone”.

How you say something can have a dramatic effect on what you say. Let’s see how that’s true by examining how you can use the pace, the pitch, and the power of your voice to add impact and meaning to what you say.
Pace

The pace or rate of delivery of the spoken word can be used to emphasize the emotion behind what’s being said. Speak slowly while emphasizing every word, and you can convey firm conviction, even anger. On the other hand, increasing the pace of what you’re saying will tell your listener that you are excited about the information you’re sharing.

Gossip - Is it Good or Bad?

I have to admit that I have a love/hate relationship with gossip. Just like most people, I find a juicy little tidbit of gossip almost irresistible. Whose getting divorced, whose kid just got arrested, and who recently got implants is the type of information that we all gather around thewater cooler” to hear.

To the males that are reading this article, be honest. You know that you like the occasion little bit of gossip as well. After all, when one guy says to another, “I went on a date with that blonde from Accounting last night and she was…” that’s gossip, and you enjoy hearing it as much as any female.

I also hate gossip. Gossip has been the ruin of countless marriages, reputations and friendships. It has caused many a sleepless night, painfully embarrassing situations, and even suicide.
Gossip Defined

What exactly is gossip? Merriam Webster’s Dictionary defines it asa rumor or report of an intimate nature.” (504) Notice the definition says nothing about the report being made with harmful intent. To put it simply, when you talk about the intimate details of someone else’s life, you are gossiping.

Remembering Names and The Art of Conversation

Has this ever happened to you? You are attending a party, a convention or some other event and you are introduced to several people that you would like to get to know, but seconds later, you find that you can't remember anyone’s name.

Even worse, have you ever started to introduce someone you've known for years and suddenly you can't remember his or her name? How embarrassing. What you are suffering from is the “meeting someone new jitters”.
What Causes the Jitters?

It’s only human nature to want to make a good impression on the people that we meet. No one wants to be laughed at, despised, or considered odd, so the first impression we make on people is very important. So, instead of concentrating on the names of the people we are being introduced to, we may be trying to put the perfect smile on our face, we may be attempting not to seem awkward when shaking hands, or perhaps nerves simply wipes our memory clean.

The same is true when we are the person making the introduction. We are the center of attention at that moment and for some of us that’s a lot of pressure. Nervousness can cause our memory to temporarily fail.

Is Making Good Conversation
Really An Art?

Well first of all, what is art? One of the many definitions the American Heritage Dictionary Fourth Edition gives for the word “art” is “a skill that is attained by study, practice, or observation” (65). That’s the definition that best fits what we mean when speaking about the art of conversation.

Let’s take a closer look at three important parts of that definition, (“study”, “practice” and “observation”) and determine whether making good conversation can be considered an art. If you don't mind, I'll start with the last one first.

Observation

From the first moment a baby’s eyes clearly focus on the world around it, that cute little bundle of curiosity begins to intently observe literally everything in view. Talk to a baby and see how she pays unblinking attention to your face; looking into your eyes, studying your expression and watching your mouth form words. That baby is learning to communicate.

That brilliant little mind is associating the movement of your lips and tongue with speech. It won't be long before he or she is making gurgling and cooing sounds, taking her first steps towards being able to hold a conversation by observing what you do.

Facial Expression and the Art of Conversation

The human face is truly a marvel. With the slight shifting of muscle and skin we are able to express immeasurable happiness, heart wrenching sadness, or paralyzing fear without uttering a single syllable. For that reason, our facial expression is an important tool to use if we want to master the art of conversation.
The Warm Smile

If you want to be an expert conversationalist then smile. A nice smile conveys to your conversation partner that you are a warm, friendly and happy person, and who wouldn't want to talk to someone like that. Also remember to vary your smile. Sometimes a small upturn of the corners of your mouth will due instead of a big toothy grin. Of course there are situations where the conversation doesn't warrant a smile at all, but be quick to flash a really great smile whenever the occasion arises.
Smiling Eyes

The eyes have been called the “windows to the soul”. What does the look in your eyes say about you? The way you look at someone can express warmth and friendliness, or disinterest and annoyance. If your conversation partner interrupts that look in your eye to be one of the later, then your conversation will quickly end. So, don't forget to smile with your eyes, and you will be a joy to converse with.

Conversation Tips:

Conversation Stoppers -

The Habitual Bickerer

Nothing can be more stimulating and enjoyable then a good old-fashioned debate, when it’s done in a spirit of fun of course. One of my fondest memories of time spent with my younger brother was the day that he and I debated for hours whether or not there is gravity in outer space. I lost of course; I'm no science whiz.

But then there are some who seem to think that every conversation should be a debate, or should I say an argument. In fact, they often say things to provoke others, always seeming to be on the opposing side of whatever the subject is. I call these people “habitual bickerers”.

Of course everyone is allowed his or her opinion, but few people enjoy the company of someone who seems to never agree on anything, no matter how small. And to make matters worse, often times the bickerer will belittle everyone else’s point of view just to keep the dispute going.

If you really enjoy a good argument and often go out of your way to provoke one, ask yourself why you do so. Is it so that you can win the argument? Does winning an argument make you feel really good? Why? Is it because it gives your ego a nice little boost?

Having good self-esteem is essential to both the mental and physical health of every human being. It is something that all of us should strive after with gusto. However, constantly putting others down in order to build oneself up is the selfish, mean-spirited way to get good self-esteem.

Becoming an expert in the art of conversation, on the other hand, is an excellent way to boost your self-esteem. People will often go out of their way to talk someone that is a good conversationalist. Why is that? Having a really good conversation is enjoyable. It gives you the opportunity to learn something new, share your own thoughts and feelings, gain new insights on things, laugh, and the list goes on and on.

So, avoid being a “habitual” bickerer. Being able to make good conversation will make you feel good about yourself. People will look forward to taking to you, and there’s nothing better for the ego than that.

Don't Be A Me Monger

What’s a me monger? Well, don't look it up in a dictionary because you won't find it. “Me monger” is a expression I've coined to describe someone who constantly turns a conversation so that he can talk about himself.

If you've ever had the experience of having a salesperson try to get you to buy the product she wants to monger or sell, then you know that a good “whatever” monger (be it a fishmonger, ironmonger or newsmonger) will always tell you that what she’s selling is better than anything else out there and it can do practically anything.

The “me monger” is also a salesperson, except the product he’s selling is himself. Any topic you bring up in conversation, from athlete’s foot to zoology, he’s been there and done that, or he knows someone who’s been there and done that. And he will usually be the strongest, the fastest or the smartest at whatever the subject is. Selling yourself might be good on a job interview, but in general conversation it’s a great way to turn your listeners off.

The Art of Conversation:

Conversation Stoppers -

The Conversation Hog

Just like a great question, observation or compliment can be a wonderful conversation starter; there are also things that we say and do that are definite conversation stoppers. Over the next few weeks, we will talk about the various conversation stoppers, something every master in the art of conversation should avoid.

One of the best ways to stop a conversation is by turning a dialogue into a monologue.

The Conversation Hog

Have you ever talked to someone who never lets you get a word in edgewise? He never pauses and never seems to notice that he’s having a one-way conversation. No one likes to talk to someone like that. Most people will either tune the conversation hog out, look for the first opportunity to get away, or both.

One way to avoid being a conversation hog is by closely observing the person you're talking to. If she gives an indication that she would like to say something, perhaps by opening her mouth or actually speaking, then pause. Let the other person contribute to the conversation

The Art of Conversation -
Good Listeners Make Good
Conversation

There’s definitely a big difference between hearing and listening. Stop for a second and just listen to the sounds around you. What do you hear?

I hear a car driving up the street outside my window, a bird chirping, the hum of my computer, and somewhere in the distance two people are having a rather heated discussion. But until I stopped and actually listened to those sounds, I totally blocked them out, even though I obviously could hear them.
Are you listening to me?

When someone who is talking to you suddenly stops and asks you,are you listening to me?” then you’re doing something that makes it seem like you’re not paying attention to what is being said. Perhaps you’re not listening. Then you’ve just been asked a legitimate question.

If you want to be an expert in the art of conversation, then you can’t let your mind wander or get distracted when people are talking to you. If you find what’s being said boring or distasteful, then perhaps its best to either discreetly change the subject or politely end the conversation.

But I Am listening.

If you find that people are constantly getting the impression that you’re not listening when in fact you are, then you’re doing something that makes it seem like you’re attention is elsewhere. Here are some tips on what you can do to indicate that you are paying close attention to the conversation, and are happy to be doing so.

1. Make good eye contact - Nothing says, “I’m not paying attention”, like looking at everything except for the person who’s talking to you. Spend 75% of your time looking into the other person’s eyes, or at the bridge of their nose if you tend to be shy, and you’ll be considered a good listener.

2. Nod occasionally - Nodding says, yes I agree, or yes I understand what’s being said.

3. Ask insightful questions - Asking questions tells the other person that you're interested in what they're saying, and by default, find them interesting.

4. Hmmm. - Making that sound is another way to indicate that you finding what’s being said interesting, and it has the added benefit of not interrupting the other person’s flow of conversation or train of thought.

5. Watch your body language – Fidgeting and crossing and uncrossing your arms can indicate impatience, while leaning in slightly towards your conversation partner indicates rapt attention.

6. Listen for Useful Facts – No doubt during the conversation your conversation partner will give away some useful facts. Did he mention his wife during the conversation, or that he likes to swim, or that he has four cats? Tuck those little pieces of information away so that you can use them as conversations starters the next time you meet. Nothing says “I find you interesting and enjoy talking to you.” like remembering a personal fact.

Keep these tips in mind, and no one will ever accuse you of not listening again, and you will find yourself well on the way to becoming a good listener who makes good conversation.

The Art of Conversation-
Prepare A Little Something To Say

I'm sure you'll agree that no one wants to talk to a bore. Whether we're at work or play, we all want to engage in conversations that are interesting and fun, not dull and tedious. Fortunately, all we have to do to become someone people enjoy talking to is take a few moments to prepare a little something to say.
Find Out What’s Going On

Thanks to modern technology, you can listen to, read or watch the news all day, everyday if you have the time and inclination. In addition to traditional media, there are web sites, e-zines and e-mail services galore all reporting the news. With all those sources of up-to-the minute news, you should never be without some topic of interest to talk about.

Even though people seem to like to talk about bad news, take special note of any good news you might hear. Stories that have happy endings are excellent subjects for conversation because they inspire and uplift the hearer, and who wouldn't want to talk to someone who can do that?

Gather Specific Information

Another way to prepare a little something to say is by brushing up on subjects that will interest the people you know you will be talking to. Are you going to be attending a dinner party with a cardiologist, or golfing with an attorney, or spending an evening with your Mother-In-Law, the avid gardener? Then find out about any new developments in his or her field or hobby so that you can ask some insightful questions. Most people like to talk about what they do for a living or their favorite pastime.
Tell a Good Joke or Two

Telling a good joke is an excellent way to make a conversation interesting, but be careful. When you are not that familiar with the person you're talking to, avoid jokes that are insulting or crude. A fat joke is not that funny to someone who is self-conscious about his weight.
Give It A Try

So the next time you're listening to the news, take note of any interesting stories you hear. Learn a little bit about the field or interests of the people you will be conversing with, and find a tasteful joke or two. Having a little something to say will cause you to excel in the art of conversation.

Conversation Starters -
What do you say after “hello”?

You've just been introduced to someone new, or you've decided to initiate a conversation with someone you'd like to get to know. So, what do you say after “Hello, nice to meet you?”

A lot of us draw a blank and squirm during an uncomfortable silence. But it doesn't have to be that way. All you need is a great conversation starter. Having a few really great conversation starters in mind is essential if you want to be an expert in the art of conversation.

What is a great conversation starter?

A great conversation starter is a question or statement that elicits more than a yes, no, or any other one-word response. It also causes the potential conversation partner to think, at least a little bit.

Do you have the time?” is not a great conversation starter because your conversation partner can simply say “no” or “its 12:30” and that’s the end of the conversation.

What does a great conversation starter consist of?

A great conversation starter would be “That’s a beautiful watch, can I ask where you got it?”

That questions serves three purposes. One, it causes your conversation partner to think about the question. Most people don't have where they purchased an item on the tip of their tongue, so some thought will have to go into the question. Two, saying “can I ask” makes you sound less pushy. Three, paying someone a compliment is a good way to create instant rapport. After all, who doesn't like a good compliment, and by default, the person who gave it?

Another great way to construct a conversation starter is by giving a little bit of personal information. A good example would be “I met the bride in college. Where did you meet her?”

This conversation starter also serves three purposes. Now that the person you are talking to knows a little bit of personal information about you, he will feel more comfortable divulging personal information about himself. Also, the answer to the question “Where did you meet her?” can elicit quiet a lengthy response. Third, you've kindly given your conversation partner a “free bee” conversation starter to use on you. Once she is finished responding to your question, she can ask, “So, what college did you and the bride attend?” That’s a great way to keep a conversation going.

It’s easy to do, so why not get started

As you can see, coming up with great conversation starters is not all that difficult. Simply take the time to think about a situation where you might want to engage in a conversation, and tailor a conversation starter for it. Are you going to be standing on a long line at the supermarket this afternoon? You might say to someone, “The lines in this place are ridiculous. Is it always this crowded?” Who knows where the conversation can go from there.

After a while, you'll become so good at it that you'll be able to come up with great conversations starters on the fly. Then you'll never again be at a loss after saying, “Hello, nice to meet you.”

How do you become an expert
at talking to strangers?

Talk to strangers.

According to Webster’s Dictionary, a stranger is a person that is unknown to you or with whom you are unacquainted.

Though our mothers may have warned us against it when we where young, as adults we have all been faced with a situation where we had to talk to a stranger, something most of us dread. Whether it’s the first day on a new job, the first time meeting our future in-laws, or meeting up with someone on a blind date, we are forced to speak with someone with whom we are unacquainted.

Add the fact that we want to make a good impression, and its easy to see why many of us are tongue-tied when it comes to talking to strangers. So, what do we do so that we can become an expert at talking to people we don’t know?

Practice, practice, practice

Do you remember the first time you tried to parallel park? Well, if you where anything like me, you ran into the curb, a fire hydrant, or a parked car on more than one occasion. In other words, you where very bad at parallel parking. But after practicing over and over again, you became an expert, able to perfectly position your car in the tightest spot in two turns of the steering wheel.

The same is true when it comes to speaking to people you don’t know. If you practice doing it, after a while it will become second nature, and you’ll enjoy the experience instead of dreading it.

Start striking up conversations with total strangers

The best way to practice talking to strangers is by talking to strangers. Make it a goal to strike up a conversation with at least one person you are unacquainted every day. The conversation doesn't have to be anything long or drawn out. Just exchange a few pleasantries. Be sure to pick someone that is relaxed and not in a hurry, like someone browsing in a bookstore.

"But I might be rejected."

That's true. However, after several tries, you’ll find that very few of the people you try to strike up a conversation with will be unpleasant, as a matter of fact you’ll find a good number of people will be quite willing to talk. And who knows, you might hit it off with someone and make a new friend.

So, go ahead and give it a try! Practice talking to strangers, and build up your confidence so that the next time you really want to make a good impression on someone you’re unacquainted with, you’ll engage in the art of conversation like a pro.

Conversation Tips

The Most Important -You've got nothing to lose
The guy who gets rejected the most is the guy who will leave with the most numbers!  The trick is to not think  this way, if you talk to her you might have a 50% chance of being rejected and a 50% chance of success, but if you don't talk to her you have a 0% chance of success. If you don't initiate the conversation it will most likely never take place!

Don't worry
Don't worry too much about WHAT you say when having a conversation with a girl. HOW you say it, and your body language are much more important. Most guys are scared that a girl will laugh at them if they say the wrong thing ,but that's just not an issue in real life ,it happends only in the movies. So stop stressing over it and realize that almost any girl that you talk to will be happy and excited if you just be real with her

A great tip
Before you meet, find out what the other person is interested in.Do a bit of research!

Loud mouth
Don't ever be that screaming bastard  "Let me see some titties!"   These are the type of guys that girls find funny and entertaining, but funny and entertaining does NOT make it to the bedroom. Don't behave with girls  in any way that could embarass them because once you make them feel uncomfortable around you in public, how are they ever going to be comfortable around you alone?

Do compliment
Try to find something to admire in the other person even as simple as attractive name.Everyone likes to be complimentes , but not flateried!Don't draw attention to her physical appearance like her hair or eyes. That could make her uncomfortable. It's better to compliment her clothes or house or car or job title. If you can do it trnsparent and naturally this will cause the girl warm to you.But be careful - every compliment has to be truthful.

You've gotta keep your head up
If something doesn't go your way, for example if you get rejected by a girl that you really had your eye on for a while... don't EVER let it get you down. That will only make a bad thing worse, and some guys never recover from something like that. Always rememberthat  there's more fish in the sea than any one  can catch, so be patient and your time will come if it hasn't already. Remember... we all have our bad
days.

Talk kindly to everyone
Guess what? When you're talking to your waiter, the cab driver or someone else, she is listening and judging. Treat everyone you talk to with kindness and respect. She will notice.

Don't worry about uncomfortable silences
They say a sign that you're comfortable with someone is when you can enjoy a good silence with them, and not feel that you have to talk the entire time. So next time one of your conversations comes to a lull, relax. Let her be the one to spark it up again. It will show her that you're comfortable with yourself, which will make her feel more comfortable with you.

Improve your lip reading skills
Ever have problems talking to girls in nightclubs just because of the simple fact that you can't hear them very well? If so, It's a simple method to get around this, and that is to improve your lip reading skills. It sounds harder than it actually is, all you need to do is watch some tv! Next time you are watching some tv shows  put your tv on mute and try to fingure out what they are talking about. If you do this one time each week for 1-2 hours you will be able to read lips extremely well, this skill requires minimal practice to learn!

Avoid fatal questions
Most guys don't realize that asking a woman questions like, "Am I your type?," "How do you like me so far?," and "Do you want to hang out again some time?," will instantly send her running for the hills.

Dont annoy her by interrupting.
Just follow the rhythm of conversation and wait until she finishes making her point before you start making yours. And don't ramble on and on about stuff that only you might be interested in. Don't over-dominate the conversation, let her have her turn to speak.

Effective Ways to Improve Vocabulary: Ten Tips for Adults

Before we begin, let's challenge the notion that people who use "big words" do so to impress or belittle other people. While it's true that some people rely on their vocabularies to elicit those responses out of insecurity, it's also true that sometimes those so-called big words are the most deft, purposeful choices for a situation.  Similar words are endowed with subtly different meanings. The art of accumulating and using a large vocabulary turns on recognizing and employing those differences.

For instance, the words "crotchety," "cantankerous," and "petulant" are rough synonyms, but they do possess different connotations. If you're communicating a nuanced thought or feeling about someone who is irritable and contrary, you have choices available to you! And the more robust your vocabulary, the more choices you have for conveying precisely what you mean.

Effective Ways to Improve Vocabulary: Tip #1
Studying lists of words is not the way. Spending time at the neighborhood Starbucks, I see plenty of university students preparing for the verbal section of the GRE with storebought word lists, fastidiously prepared flash cards, and other trappings of standardized test mania best served alongside a venti mocha. While not entirely futile, this list-based approach to vocabulary building is misguided at best. Words exist in contexts, and studying words divorced from their contexts makes those words harder to learn - and worse yet, harder to use later. (Think of it this way: if you want to improve your racquetball serve, you'll probably want to position yourself in an actual racquetball court, right?).

Effective Ways to Improve Vocabulary: Tip #2
Read a lot. The experience of encountering unfamiliar words in print is remarkably instructive. First, because you're already engaged in reading something, you are arguably more motivated to learn a new word so that you better understand what you're voluntarily reading. Second, you have come across the word organically rather than artificially (i.e. in a vocabulary list). You'll pick up new words - and clarify meanings of words already in your toolkit - by exposing yourself to them in their, shall we say, natural habitat. The context will enrich your attempt to build a better vocabulary.

Effective Ways to Improve Vocabulary: Tip #3
Read good writing. I admit that "good writing" is a contentious term, but in general, I consider writing to be "good" if it communicates complex ideas in ways that are clear and concise yet thorough and detailed. In other words, there should be a tension between sometimes keeping it simple and sometimes using so-called "big words" words because they communicate something that common words just can't.
To put it another way, look for writing that has an intellectual, exploratory bent.

So, what should you read regularly? I'm not qualified to prescribe exact sources for all, but I'll reveal my biases and recommend some periodicals and blogs I like:

The New York Times (especially on Sundays)
The New Yorker
The Utne Reader
Salon (
www.salon.com)
Malcolm Gladwell's Blog (
www.gladwell.typepad.com)

There's a more liberal orientation to the above, but if you prefer socially conservative reading, try the National Review or anything by Ann Coulter. Also, the above are all periodicals or blogs. Regular books are equally effective, and it would be imprudent to ignore them. Fiction (the sort good enough to be classified as literature) and nonfiction are both bound to build your vocabulary.

Effective Ways to Improve Vocabulary: Tip #4.
Don't (exclusively) read fluff. It's okay to indulge in less intellectual reading and writing. We all do it, and it can be fun. But don't read fluff so steadfastly that you ignore heavier stuff. USA Today is an example of a fluff newspaper notorious for watering down concepts and avoiding sophisticated language in order to appeal to the masses. Although it's arguable that they're doing some good by making news more accessible to a wider group of readers, they're also guilty of neglecting critical shades of grey when it comes to politics, economics, sociology, and the other disciplines they typically cover. Unless your vocabulary is indubitably weak, you're not going to improve it by reading something like USA Today.

Effective Ways to Improve Vocabulary: Tip #5.
Diversity of topics is important. Read some natural science stuff. Then read some applied science stuff. Read some contemporary literature. Then read some Shakespeare. Comb through a pop psychology book and then consume a humorous work (and no fair saying those last two are the same!).  Varied reading will sharpen both general and subject-specific vocabularies. The diversity of reading material at liberal arts colleges is one reason that graduates of such schools generally possess better vocabularies. History. Philosophy. Biology. Travel. Anthropology. Linguistics. Art. Gender Studies. Politics. You don't have to be an expert in all disciplines to build a meaty vocabulary, but you do need to be a well-informed reader who's confident and comfortable reading on topics outside your areas of immediate expertise.

Effective Ways to Improve Vocabulary: Tip #6.
The process of improving your vocabulary is ongoing - not so much a discrete act as a component of everyday edification. You can't just sit down for five minutes a day and say, "I'm going to do my vocabulary workout right now." It's not like doing ab crunches or squat thrusts.

Effective Ways to Improve Vocabulary: Tip #7.
Stop and look up unfamiliar words immediately. Read with a thorough dictionary handy - never a reductive, overly abridged pocket model. Better yet, use a resource like
www.dictionary.com, which provides definitions from multiple sources and often gives useful examples of the vocabulary in action. And don't just hastily look up the word and move on. Take time to understand pronunciation, say the word aloud, and read the sample sentences if they're present. Doing so will help firm your grasp on the new language.

Effective Ways to Improve Vocabulary: Tip #8.
Don't limit yourself to learning new words in print. Picking up vocabulary in the midst of a public lecture, a PBS show, or a radio broadcast might be a little trickier (because spelling isn't obvious), but it's doable. You may even want to jot down phonetic versions words that you encounter when you're indisposed and then investigate them when you have free time.

Effective Ways to Improve Vocabulary: Tip #9.Â
Try out your new vocabulary in speech and writing. While I don't advocate standing around waiting for the chance to drop your newest gewgaw, don't be afraid to experiment with language. It is incumbent upon us as English speakers to celebrate the language by actually using it. Sprinkle new words in your blogs, in your emails, and in your conversations so long as they're germane.

Effective Ways to Improve Vocabulary: Tip #10.
Delight in language. It sounds absurd for me to preach this. After all, how can I insist that people revel in words? But the truth is that you'll learn more effectively when you find it enjoyable. Let me illustrate.

Look at the word "aspersion." It's a term that I first encountered several years ago. Although I recognized the word, I admitted to myself that I didn't really understand exactly what it meant. When I looked it up, I was surprised to see that it had two basic meanings: one related to slander and one related to holy water. Depending on your attitude toward the church, there is some laughable irony present. I consistently come across little gems - funny stories, unusual origins, previously unfamiliar double meanings….and it's, well, fun! I hope that, when you reach for the dictionary to define a new vocabulary word, it's not something you dread.

Effective Ways to Build Vocabulary: Final Thought
Don't overdo it. Remember: there's a reason why words like "encomium" and "ossified" are not used on a daily basis. Many vocabulary words derive their power and import from their infrequent deployment.
